Once you have decided to use a duplicate file program to clean out your hard drive, there are several things to consider when choosing the right program for you and your computer.
- PC or Mac? It may seem obvious to most, but you need to make sure that the duplicate file program you decide to use is compatible with your computer. There are programs specifically designed to work with a Mac and some specifically designed to work with a PC.
- What Kind of Files do You Want to Scan? Do you want to clean out and organize your documents, spread sheets, and presentations or do you have a packed photo/image library that needs to be organized and cleaned out? Some programs can scan and identify various files like documents, photos, and MP3s. Other programs specialize in identifying specific items like photos. Know what you want to accomplish before you make a decision.
- How Proficient of a Computer User Are You? Some programs are catered to professionals with a deeper knowledge base than the rest of us. Trying to navigate the interface on some of these programs can be like trying to read Chinese. However, there are also many programs that are made for the everyday user and are easy to navigate for the average user.
- How Much Control do You Want? Most types of duplicate file program will allow you to customize your search criteria which will allow you to determine the level of similarity between files is called a duplicate. You can adjust files so that they must be identical in name and content to be identified as a duplicate, or you can customize the settings so files that only share specific qualities are duplicates.
