So you’ve had your Mac for a while now and you are starting to notice that it is not running like it used to and you want to know how to make my Mac faster. There are several things you can do, but before you go out and spend a bunch of money upgrading your CPU or buying more RAM and a faster drive, consider freeing up space on the hard drive you have now. Chances are if you have had your Mac for six months or longer, cleaning out your hard drive is all it will take to get your Mac running the way you want it to. It is just a fact that Mac’s with a hard drive at or past the 90% capacity mark run much slower than they should. Mac OS X needs to have free memory to run efficiently. That free space on your hard drive is known as “virtual memory”, and Macs are extremely dependent upon that “virtual memory” to run at their peak performance.
Now that you know what you need to do to make my Mac faster, how do you go about doing it? Freeing up space on your hard drive is not as simple as it may seem. If your hard drive has passed the 90% capacity threshold, you have a lot of files to go through and delete. If that doesn’t sound like fun, try using a duplicate file finder program. Undoubtedly you have accumulated multiples of the same file if you have gone over the 90% mark, so rather than going through your hard drive manually and deciding which files you can live without, trying deleting the files you don’t need.
Tidy Up! is a highly recommended program for Mac users. It has fully customizable search settings and measures that ensure no files you want to keep will be deleted.
