It normally takes a really slow mac to finally look for reasons why OS X is running slowly. What was once a blazing fireball of speed is now a sluggish sloth. Multitasking big programs with ease is now watching a rainbow-colored beach ball spin for what seems like forever. So how did our Mac OS X get to be so slow, and what can we do to fix this slow mac? Let’s find out.
Reason #1: You have too many programs running at the same time.
A lot of Mac users like to leave several programs running at once. When it’s brand new, you won’t notice the lag, but after some time, this seemingly innocent preference will cause a big time slowdown. Simply put – if you’re not using the program in the next couple hours, then close it down.
Reason #2: Your Preference Files Are Corrupt
Strange things happen to preference files of the programs that you run. If your Apple computer is slow when you are running a particular program, then try deleting its preference file and relaunching the app. You may consider backing up the old preference file first.
Reason #3: You Have Too Many Dashboard Widgets
Is you dashboard cluttered with widgets? Each one of those innocent looking widgets uses memory. Keep it simple and uncluttered for best results.
Reason #4: Corrupt or Wrong Firmware
You should make sure that your firmware is up to date. It’s simple to do so, just click ‘Software Update’ in the Apple menu. You can also schedule that your computer updates automatically in your System Preferences folder.
Reason #5: Your Hard Drive is Nearly Full
Pretty straight forward… if you don’t have enough space for virtual memory, then your computer will perform extremely slowly. Make sure you have the extra space necessary for the programs that you run.
Reason #6: Animated Wallpapers
I know they look pretty, but they hog system resources. Keep your wallpaper static for best results.
Reason #7: Duplicate font files, music files, email messages, etc.
Duplicate files are a big, nasty reason for Mac slowdown that many people don’t realize. Simply removing duplicate files can make a huge difference in the speed of your mac.
If you want your mac fast again, then consider following the advice above. Most importantly of the 7 tips, you should review software that will help you quickly remove duplicate files. I recommend one program in particular, see if it’s right for you.
