Tidy Up vs. Dupe Guru

Posted: October 23rd, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Remove Double Files | No Comments »

I was passed along an e-mail today that I should consider a piece of software called ‘Dupe Guru’. So, I installed the software on my Macbook to compare it’s features to the current #1 pick on this site, Tidy Up.

What I first found, was that Dupe Guru took an awful long time to download. I think there must have been problems with it’s server, because the internet speeds in my office reach 50 mbps, and the download took nearly an hour.

But irregardless, the speed of the download isn’t what’s important.

When I first booted the software up, there was a request for a donation. I understand that this software is considered “Fairware,” which basically means it’s free to try, but they ask that you pay a recommended amount. I found this to be unnecessary to occur right when you boot the program up. You should wait to actually let the user try the software before asking for any type of donation.

The interface was easy to use and straight-forward. When I began to attempt to try the more advanced features that I’m used to when I use Tidy Up, I found that features were missing.

Most notably, I wanted to find music files that were not identical in file name, but were similar in length and content. Tidy Up can match songs in this way, which is one of it’s most impressive features, while Dupe Guru wasn’t able to match songs in this way. That left me pretty disappointed.

There were duplicate mp3s that were not removed, because the searching capabilities were not where they needed to be.

Conclusion:

The price of Dupe Guru is slightly cheaper, but in my humble opinion, TidyUp is the better option, and I’ll continue to recommend it to friends and visitors to this site.

How to Make My Mac Faster

Posted: November 14th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Remove Double Files, Uncategorized | No Comments »

So you’ve had your Mac for a while now and you are starting to notice that it is not running like it used to and you want to know how to make my Mac faster. There are several things you can do, but before you go out and spend a bunch of money upgrading your CPU or buying more RAM and a faster drive, consider freeing up space on the hard drive you have now. Chances are if you have had your Mac for six months or longer, cleaning out your hard drive is all it will take to get your Mac running the way you want it to. It is just a fact that Mac’s with a hard drive at or past the 90% capacity mark run much slower than they should. Mac OS X needs to have free memory to run efficiently. That free space on your hard drive is known as “virtual memory”, and Macs are extremely dependent upon that “virtual memory” to run at their peak performance.

Now that you know what you need to do to make my Mac faster, how do you go about doing it? Freeing up space on your hard drive is not as simple as it may seem. If your hard drive has passed the 90% capacity threshold, you have a lot of files to go through and delete. If that doesn’t sound like fun, try using a duplicate file finder program. Undoubtedly you have accumulated multiples of the same file if you have gone over the 90% mark, so rather than going through your hard drive manually and deciding which files you can live without, trying deleting the files you don’t need.

Tidy Up! is a highly recommended program for Mac users. It has fully customizable search settings and measures that ensure no files you want to keep will be deleted.

8 Ways to Speed up Mac OS X

Posted: November 3rd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Remove Double Files | No Comments »

If you have had your Mac for any length of time the chances are that it is probably not running as well as it should, or as well as you want it to. There are several ways to speed up Mac OS X

  1. Restart your Mac – Most people can go weeks without shutting down their computer and a simple restart or shutting down your Mac when you go to bed can solve a lot of issues.
  2. Close some applications – The same way many people don’t shut down their computers, many of us also run several applications simultaneously. If you can, only run the applications you are currently using.
  3. Clean out Startup Items – Many applications automatically set themselves up as a start up item and open every time you restart or login.
  4. Turn off Universal Access, Bluetooth, Speech Recognition, and Internet Sharing if you don’t use them – While these are valuable feature for those who use them, they take up valuable processor and RAM resources.
  5. Clean Out ‘Other’ System Preferences – Chances are you probably have a Preference Pane that you don’t use, so it could be advantageous to disable it.
  6. Cool off- MacBooks are notorious for running extremely hot and every Mac runs faster with a cooler processor.
  7. Keep an eye on Activity Monitor – Activity Monitor comes with OS X and tracks your memory usage, RAM requirements, and CPU usage. By keeping an eye on this you can identify what may be dominating your processor’s attention.
  8. Clean out your hard drive – Over time your hard drive is bound to fill up. Downloading videos, images, spreadsheets, MP3s, and documents eats up hard drive space, obviously. Macs that don’t have at least 10% available hard drive space will run poorly. If you don’t know how to go about making room on your hard drive, try using duplicate file finder software like Tidy Up!. It will identify duplicate files and restore your Mac’s performance.

If you use the wrong tools, removing duplicate files can be a painstakingly drawn out tedious process. However, if you use the right tools like an easy duplicate finder, removing the duplicate files from your hard drive can simply be a matter of a couple mouse clicks.

There are several reasons that people accumulate duplicate files:

  • Transferring photos from your digital camera to your computer can cause photos you had previously downloaded to be downloaded again and stored in a different file
  • Often times, the wrong button is pressed when files are being moved
  • Many files downloaded from sites like Google don’t have file names, causing files to share the same title

These are just a few examples of how easy it is for duplicate files to infest your hard drive and affect the speed and overall performance of your computer. Duplicate File Manager on Mac

Posted: August 8th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Duplicate File Manager Mac | No Comments »

Whether you want to get rid of duplicate autio files wasting space in itunes, or if you just want to clean out all of the duplicate files and duplicate software in your computer, you’re going to need a capable duplicate file manager. Mac users are the gifted group that have several options, some are user-friendly and straight-forward, while others can potentially delete files that they shouldn’t have.

When researching a mac duplicate file manager, in my opinion, the most important factor is how easy it is to control which files are selected, and what’s done with them. You might, for example, find a folder of duplicate songs which are taking up gigs of unecessary space, however, you may not want to nuke them off your computer. You might, instead, want to back them up on a DVD, or portable hard disk. I’ve used programs which make this function easy to follow, and programs which wiped out files that I didn’t want them to.

The next most important factor when deciding which Duplicate File Manager is – how advanced of a search can you perform? I ideally want to use a program that is easy enough for my grandmother to use, but advanced enough that I can use it to really dig in and find files based on bitrates, author, time, and many other factors.

I’m not a review author by trade, but I can say that when it comes to duplicate file managers, there are only a couple of pieces of software that I can truly suggest out of a sea of options.

Luckily for my readers, there is a limited free trial of my top choice, Tidy Up. You can use the program for free and find and remove a selection of your duplicate files or songs.
